I am very pleased to have the opportunity to offer a Procreate workshop at the Academy Center of the Arts. This iPad app is the most robust digital drawing and painting tool I have ever used. What really pleases me is how much kids like it. Don’t be confused; this is a tool for professionals and adults too. Here’s why it so great.
- Look What I Made
Skill building is confidence building. Few things please me more than to see kids (and adults) show me their work and radiate pride at their accomplishments. Here is a gallery view from a student’s Procreate app from last summer. This collection shows not only a mastery of the tool but also the pure joy of creation.
Another collection of student work created in Procreate. These young students are obviously not intimidated by this robust app and one image inspires another.
- Ease of Use
Some very smart interface designers worked on this app. I find that with a good introduction to the tools, students are off and running on their own. There are tips and tricks I can add along the way, but most students find their way fairly easily.
This is what the interface looks like. I painted this bird for one of my preschool media projects. The tools are accessed from the top panel. The icons to the right are easy to decipher. I have never asked kids what they thought they meant and not gotten the correct answer.
You can see it’s a sleek interface. The younger students only need to use the brushes, possibly the eraser and the color selector. On the right are sliders for opacity and stoke size. There is an easy undo, a favorite with digital artists of all ages.
- The Brushes
The variety of brush tools in Procreate makes it very easy to make something amazing relatively easily. This is just one selection of choices from one of the fifteen categories of brushes. My very favorites is Victorian, seen here highlighted in blue.
You can see the Victorian Brush used on the inside of my Valentine and in the green background.
Cool drip brushes were used by this student to make a background image for a digital book cover.
- Make Art for Animation and Apps
I am frequently offering workshops that include instruction in Procreate as a tool to use with app production and animation. Images made in Procreate can be saved to the iPad Photos and easily imported into other programs. Here are some examples of student work used for their projects.
- Art Making Doesn’t Stop with the Workshop
I have heard from very happy parents that their children have continued to work with Procreate to complete assignments at school. Learning these digital tools develops a visual and technical vocabulary that also translates to other digital tools and other media creation projects. This is problem solving and critical thinking at its best…helping students and adults visually express themselves creatively.
Come and join us to explore this wonderful tool for artists of all ages. We have iPads to lease if you need one for the workshop.
