State recognition celebrates 120 years of history, community, and the enduring power of the arts in Central Virginia.
The Academy Center of the Arts was honored to welcome Senator Mark Peake and Delegate Wendell Walker to the Historic Academy Theatre as they presented a Virginia Senate Commending Resolution recognizing the theatre’s 120-year legacy and its contributions to arts, education, historic preservation, tourism, and economic vitality throughout the Commonwealth.
The presentation brought together community leaders, supporters, Academy staff, and elected officials to celebrate a landmark that has been part of Lynchburg’s story since 1905.
While the resolution recognizes the Historic Academy Theatre’s remarkable history, the event was also a reminder of the role the arts continue to play in bringing people together. Today, the theatre serves as the centerpiece of the Academy Center of the Arts campus, welcoming audiences, students, artists, and community members from across Central Virginia.
In his remarks, Academy Center of the Arts Executive Director Cyrus Pace reflected on the significance of the occasion.
“This is what it looks like when we care deeply about our shared humanity and the collective experiences that remind us we are united.”
The Historic Academy Theatre has witnessed more than a century of change, growth, and community life. Following a community-supported $30 million restoration and reopening in 2018, it has become a catalyst for cultural, educational, and economic activity throughout the region. Through performances, exhibitions, arts education, outreach initiatives, and community partnerships, the Academy continues to build upon the foundation established by generations before us.
Delegate Wendell Walker spoke about the Academy’s impact on the community and region.
“The Academy Center of the Arts is one of Lynchburg’s greatest assets. It showcases the creativity, talent, and spirit of our community while drawing visitors from across the region to experience all that our city has to offer. We are proud to recognize the Academy for its continued commitment to enriching lives through the arts, supporting local artists, and serving as a gathering place for people of all ages. I am honored to join Senator Peake in celebrating the Academy’s many contributions to our community.”
Senator Mark Peake, who carried the resolution in the Virginia Senate, highlighted the Academy’s enduring importance to Central Virginia.

This recognition honors not only a historic building, but also the artists, educators, volunteers, donors, patrons, and community members who have helped shape its legacy.
