Arrive at the start of your preferred audition date, prepared to complete paperwork and provide us necessary information including any known conflicts between October 15 and December 3.  Bring a pre-printed list of prior experience if available.  The audition form will contain space to write this if needed.   Provision of a headshot is optional.  The musical portion of the audition will take place first.  Parties will be heard in the order in which they arrive.  For this portion, an accompanist will be provided.  Bring the sheet music for the musical theatre song of your choice.  (Do not choose a song from this show.)  No prerecorded accompaniment or a cappella renditions will be allowed.   For the acting portion, readings will be provided from the script; auditionees may be paired or grouped in various combinations.  Parties need only attend one audition date.  If needed, callbacks will be held Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00pm.

Pulled directly from the stories of O. Henry, the setting is New York City around the turn of the 20th century.  Christmas is approaching, but for one young couple (Jim and Della) the prospects for celebration are bleak, as both are out of work and penniless.  The thread of their story is woven by newsboy-narrator Willy, who guides us along our journey with Jim and Della while introducing us to various city folk going about their holiday business, as well as the amusing plight of a cheerful bum named Soapy who longs to be arrested.  A simple story about the consequences and significance of the act of giving, THE GIFTS OF THE MAGI creates an aura of warmth in the cold, impersonal winter city.

THE GIFTS OF THE MAGI provides roles for 4 men and 2 women of varying ages.  Ages listed are merely target ages for the characters.  All roles are flexible regarding age and race.

Willy Porter  –  MALE, TEENS TO 20s, HIGH TENOR.  Newsboy and narrator, Willy maintains the overall narrative for the audience.  Charming and innocent exterior, yet knowledgeable and wise within.

Jim Dillingham – MALE, 20s TO 30s, HIGH BARITONE / TENOR.  Husband in our struggling married duo.  Out of work, and wishing to be strong, yet increasingly stressed and desperate.

Della Dillingham – FEMALE, 20s TO 30s, COLORATURA SOPRANO.  Jim’s wife.  Torn between supporting her husband and managing her own sense of identity during a stressful holiday season.

The City (Him) – MALE ADULT (ANY AGE), HIGH BARITONE.  The personification of NYC.  Him and Her perform many roles, including pompous restaurant staff, sales clerks, and various other individuals.

The City (Her) – FEMALE ADULT (ANY AGE), MEZZO-SOPRANO.  The personification of NYC.  Him and Her perform many roles, including pompous restaurant staff, sales clerks, and various other individuals.

Soapy Smith – MALE, 30s TO 60s, BARITONE.  Simply: a freeloading bum.  Soapy would rather be in jail with an adequate bed and free meals than hold a job.  Comic relief yet provides introspection.

The Academy Center of the Arts has always put our patrons, our supporters, and our community members first. That’s why, when COVID-19 began to spread throughout the region, we closed our doors ahead of official governing regulations, and why we continue to put tremendous thought into when and how we will reopen those doors to the public in the future.

Following Governor Northam’s Executive Order No. 65, we are officially releasing our plans to reopen our educational and gallery venues, as well as our guidelines for reopening our performance venues in the future.
