Instructor: Solly Blank
Solly Blank is a native of Heidelberg, Germany, where she began her study of art. Solly has lived in Lynchburg since 1977. In 1980, Solly took drawing, watercolor and pastels classes with Howard Coleman at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. Her love for watercolor started and she continued classes with Coleman and then began classes with Dick Frisbee. Solly continued her art education in classes with Ralph Smith, Ernest Johnson, Frank Webb, Don Andrews, Serge Hollerbach and Tony Couch. In recent years, Solly became interested in oil painting and studied with local artists Bertha Crockett and Rosalie Day White. Solly likes to tackle any subject matter, including landscape, florals, animals, architecture, interiors, and portraits. Most importantly, Solly likes to create compositions which include people. Solly says, “I am fascinated with light and shadow and how they affect the composition. Watercolor paintings have a delicate and transparent quality which presents a constant challenge to ‘control’ the medium which is very appealing.” Solly Blank’s work is hanging in many private collections and her watercolors are in the permanent collection of Lynchburg College. Solly has been accepted in many juried shows and won numerous awards. Solly teaches watercolor classes at the Academy Center of Arts and in recent years, the Lynchburg Art Club.
