Artist Statement

“All art work is made up of similar aesthetic elements….shape, color, composition, line, content, presentation, and subject matter. These are the tools of our trade, employed differently and used to create what is unique to you.

My work is primarily abstracted because I value the multiplicity of interpretations encouraged by not tying an image to a representational form. I also frequently work in series because it gives me the opportunity to explore and build a body of work that speaks to a concept. The idea or concept that births a series may be of importance to me, but it need not be of importance to you. My goal is for the viewer to have their own unique response and interpretive experience.

Much of my life has been spent in a rural environment, so it is no surprise that organic interludes surface and participate in my paintings. We all paint our internal and external experiences and I am going to share one with you tonight . February before last an artist friend, who is an avid photographer and gardener, aimed her camera onto the surface of her wheelbarrow filled with garden debris and frozen water. After looking at her images, she emailed me three of them, saying that they were reminiscent of my paintings. These three images serve as the impetus for the series of paintings I am sharing with you tonight. These paintings are not necessarily about what is in a puddle of water frozen in a wheelbarrow, but rather looking at what is below the surface….to examine and capture what often escapes us. They are temporal and elusive in nature. I strive to capture the internal environ that secrets them away by painting this world inside/out and by examining the parts as well as the whole. These paintings emerge from a common impetus, yet differ widely. These images are about the transformation of taking one shape into another, the blending of different elements to create a new whole, capturing secreted spaces that juxtaposition the emerging growth and frozen trajectories, shattered pieces fusing. This work is about metamorphosis and change. Aristotle said that the aim of art is not to represent the outward appearance of things but their inward significance. In this age of warp speed change, I invite you to join me in looking beyond the surface, to forget what you think you are supposed to see, to look beyond the perceived whole …to examine and explore the PARTS IS PARTS !”
