Mark Making : Process & Presence
This six-week studio series invites adult artists of all levels to explore the expressive power of the mark. Led by artist and mentor Toby Penney, each 1.5-hour class offers a hands-on, process-based approach that encourages curiosity, experimentation, and connection with materials.
Whether you’re new to art or looking to deepen your creative practice, this class will inspire you to slow down, observe, and rediscover the simple act of making. Each week introduces a new mark-making system using accessible tools and materials, helping you develop a personal visual language that supports your ongoing artistic growth. Toby provides supportive, individualized guidance to help you explore both structure and spontaneity in your work.
What you’ll learn:
• The fundamentals of mark-making and how line, pressure, and rhythm create energy in artwork
• Techniques for using accessible and unconventional tools.
• Techniques for activating markmaking as a working meditation.
• An optional final session for integrating your favorite techniques into a personal project or series
By the end of this series, you’ll have a collection of exploratory works that reflect your creative development and a deeper understanding of self—plus a toolkit of repeatable, approachable practices to sustain your artmaking beyond the studio.
We’ll provide all the materials you need, but feel free to bring along:
• Any personal brushes, pens, or objects you enjoy using
• A sketchbook or notebook for observations and process notes
This class pairs beautifully with Creative Journaling or Abstract Painting for those interested in expanding their creative expression across multiple mediums.
