Our oil painting class will be designed for painters of all levels of experience. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with beginning oil painters as well as those who have painted before. I especially like to show those who have not painted with oils before how to quickly learn about the medium and achieve desirable results quickly. I think one way to do this is by using a limited palette of only a few colors, of course the primary colors and several others for convenience. So we’ll learn about mixing colors. Our primary subject matter will be landscapes and we will focus on composition, values (lights and darks), color and details in nature.
Instructor : Rodney Laughon
Rodney Laughon is an exceptionally talented artist, who unlike many other successful artists, did not begin painting until his thirties. He became interest in painting as a result of helping his son with a school art project. The majority of Laughon’s works are landscapes, open plein-air paintings or studio works derived from plein-air paintings. While best known for his works depicting the mountains, streams, and valleys for Virginia and North Carolina, Laughon enjoys travel and has painted seascapes from both U.S. coasts and has produced a significant body of work based upon subjects from the American West. An award-winning artist, Laughon’s is currently represented by several galleries and his work has recently been exhibited at the Booth Western Art Museum. Laughon resides in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he maintains a studio on the historic Rivermont Ave.
