Exploring Improv Workshop

Instructor: Joe Blum Are you familiar with Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Upright Citizens Brigade or The Second City? This two hour workshop will introduce you to the concepts and skills of improvisational theater such as spontaneity, trust, agreement and listening. Basic improv skills are good not just for performing theater or improv, but also valuable in professional settings by helping you to think on your feet and communicate more effectively. No experience is necessary, only a willingness to get out of your comfort zone, get a little silly and have some fun. Instructor Bio: Joe Blum has been performing improv comedy for the past thirteen years in Los Angeles, Syracuse, NY and Minneapolis, MN. He currently performs with the Lynchburg improv troupe Adults With Crayons. Joe was a founding member of the Syracuse Improv Collective, producing comedy variety shows and developing an improv training center. He co-directed the Thumbs UPstate Improv Festival in Syracuse from 2011 – 2014. In addition to teaching improv classes at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, he has taught improv classes and workshops in his communities and enjoys helping others discover the magic of improv.

Beginning Long-Form Improv

Instructor: Joe Blum This four-week long class will get you started on your improv journey, providing you with the introductory skills of trust, agreement, listening, spontaneity, and give and take. As long-form improv is often described as unscripted theater, you will also be introduced to performing basic, fun scenes. No experience required. We are thrilled to offer a performance opportunity for students previously in the Academy’s youth programs who are now in college and/or are young adults. This cast will be performing in our Historic Academy of Music Theatre. Students will need to sign up to audition for this show using the register button. If cast they will be given the registration link for payment. _________________________________________________ Audition information: Students will only need to attend one of the audition dates. April 24 from 6-9pm or April 25 from 10am-1pm. All students need to prepare 32 bars from a jazz song. If auditioning in person, you will have a choreography portion at auditions. Students who are out of town will have the opportunity to submit an audition video singing 32 bars of a jazz song as well as 60 seconds of a jazz or hip hop dance number.
