Palette Knife Painting: Winter Landscapes

Instructor: Alice Glass Students will work alongside artist Alice Glass as she takes them through her process of painting with a palette knife. The instructor will use a landscape as her inspiration for this piece and will show students how she utilizes different techniques to create her art. Much of this class will be demonstration based but students will come out with their own paintings by the end of class. Supplies are included. Artist’s Bio: Raised in a family brimming with commercial and fine artists, Alice Glass has always had a deep love for art, but didn’t start painting until early 2015. Her first experimental paintings gave way to a variety of subject matter including abstracts, florals, landscapes, Mediterranean villages, beaches, still life, and commissioned pieces of family houses and pets. Most of Alice’s work features bright and colorful acrylic paint on canvas, and most of her work is produced exclusively with her favorite selection of palette knives. Alice’s style is to quickly create her subject matter with broad painterly strokes leaving thick, expressive bands and pods of colors mixed on her palette board as well as the canvas itself. Instructor: Arnulfo Jacinto In this class, students will have the opportunity to express themselves through art while building upon the basic principles and foundations of drawing, including different grades of paper and pencils, light and shadow, and perspective. Because each student is unique, projects may be altered and one-on-one instruction will be given to suit each student’s skills, talents, knowledge, and interest level. Supplies are included. Artist’s Bio: Arnulfo, aka “Arnold” or “Nuffy”, is a native of Santa Paula, California, which is located about an hour north of Los Angeles.  He has had multiple successes in both the athletic and art fields. He competed in the 1984 Olympics in Sprint Canoe Kayak and later went on to become a National coach at the Olympic Training Centers in Lake Placid, New York and San Diego, California.  After working as a firefighter for 7 years, he decided to return to school and graduated from the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Art and Designs with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Instructor: Justin Rice With the help of instructor Justin Rice, students will explore the world of graphic mark making through the use of hand carving tools, woodblocks and the printing press. This class will focus on the creation of an original high contrast single color editioned print. This class will cover the process from start to finish. Discussion will include block preparation, image transfer, carving technique, and printing by hand and with the use of a machine press. Relief Printing is open to beginning through advanced printmakers. This class will serve as the base course to the broad studio practice of printmaking. All supplies included. Artist’s Bio: Justin Rice is a multi disciplinary artist working with drawing, printmaking, woodworking and ceramics. He earned his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, majoring in Drawing with a concentration in Printmaking. In this introductory course, participants will learn the philosophy, method, and basic approach to creating Zentangle art. Using pen, paper, and easy-to-do doodles, watch as your tangles come to life! Artist’s Bio: Laura Watts is a former high school art teacher, graphic designer, and interior decorator.
