Artist’s Bio: Solly Blank is a native of Heidelberg, Germany, where she began her study of art. Solly has lived in Lynchburg since 1977. In 1980, Solly took drawing, watercolor and pastels classes with Howard Coleman at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. Her love for watercolor started and she continued classes with Coleman and then began classes with Dick Frisbee. Solly continued her art education in classes with Ralph Smith, Ernest Johnson, Frank Webb, Don Andrews, Serge Hollerbach and Tony Couch. In recent years, Solly became interested in oil painting and studied with local artists Bertha Crockett and Rosalie Day White. Clay Lab – investigating the surface through material studies, clay science and experimentation. Open to all skill levels. “Further your understanding of clay as a raw material to realized object.”   Tuition includes a 25 lb. bag of clay and glaze and firing costs.  Instructor: Justin Rice   Justin Rice is a multi disciplinary artist working with drawing, printmaking, woodworking and ceramics. He earned his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, majoring in Drawing with a concentration in Printmaking. His large scale drawings, woodblock prints and etchings explore the narrative world of graphic mark making. Justin is a founding member and co-owner of Oxide Pottery in Lynchburg VA. He has been a full time potter and instructor for 10 years. His work is carried in galleries and museum shops across the United States, most notably: Museum of Art and Design NY, Baltimore Museum of Art, American Folk Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Art and American Visionary Art Museum. Justin’s current work at the Academy focuses on developing the tactile clay surface with the use of locally harvested materials in conjunction with the reduction atmosphere of the gas kiln. Upon visiting Lynchburg she discovered the Pottery Studio at the Academy center and loved it.  Her passion for clay, mosaics, and pottery brought her to teaching classes and workshops there. Instructor: Arnulfo Jacinto In this class, students will have the opportunity to express themselves through art while building upon the basic principles and foundations of drawing, including different grades of paper and pencils, light and shadow, and perspective. Because each student is unique, projects may be altered and one-on-one instruction will be given to suit each student’s skills, talents, knowledge, and interest level. Supplies are included. Artist’s Bio: Arnulfo, aka “Arnold” or “Nuffy”, is a native of Santa Paula, California, which is located about an hour north of Los Angeles.  He has had multiple successes in both the athletic and art fields. He competed in the 1984 Olympics in Sprint Canoe Kayak and later went on to become a National coach at the Olympic Training Centers in Lake Placid, New York and San Diego, California.  After working as a firefighter for 7 years, he decided to return to school and graduated from the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Art and Designs with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
