Instructor: Kenny Weinfurtner This class is open to beginners and experienced painters alike, offering information, history and theories of painting combined with hands on mentored practice. You can study the basics of painting such as how brushes and paint work, color mixing, and beginning a painting. Or you can practice more advanced techniques like painting light, drawing with the brush, and scaling in perspective. All subject matter is welcome whether you’re interested in landscapes or portraiture. What do you want to say and how do you want to say it? Instructor: Arnulfo Jacinto In this class, students will have the opportunity to express themselves through art while building upon the basic principles and foundations of painting. The class will include lecture and demonstration. While this class is perfect for beginners who are seeking to learn the fundamentals of painting, the lessons and projects will be geared toward individual skill and interest levels and is suitable for intermediate to advanced art students. Students will learn the basics of color theory, proper application of paint, and fundamentals of composition and design. Because each student is unique, projects may be altered and one-on-one instruction will be given to suit each student’s skills, talents, knowledge, and interest level. Supplies are provided but previous students may be asked to purchase canvases. Gelatin Plate Printing

Instructor: Joanna McGlothlin A modern take on an ancient process, gelli plate printing utilizes a reusable gelatin style printing plate to make single prints using acrylic paint. A variety of tools will be utilized to create textures and patterns. We will create a multi layer print together and then be set free to play and experiment on our own. The resulting prints can be used for collage projects, such as art journals or card making or simply framed and used as art itself. Instructor Bio: Joanna McGlothlin is a mixed media artist working in acrylic and collage with found objects. She creates abstractions with the goal of evoking a feeling in the viewer. She discovered her love of all things creative at an early age. Whether it was hand-sewing clothing for her stuffed animals, constructing paper creations with glue and scissors or simply eating the occasional crayon she was always up to something. Joanna strives to keep that child-like sense of play alive in her creative practice today. She believes anyone can tap into their own creativity with play and practice. Exploring Improv Workshop

Instructor: Joe Blum Are you familiar with Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Upright Citizens Brigade or The Second City? This two hour workshop will introduce you to the concepts and skills of improvisational theater such as spontaneity, trust, agreement and listening. Basic improv skills are good not just for performing theater or improv, but also valuable in professional settings by helping you to think on your feet and communicate more effectively. No experience is necessary, only a willingness to get out of your comfort zone, get a little silly and have some fun. Instructor Bio: Joe Blum has been performing improv comedy for the past thirteen years in Los Angeles, Syracuse, NY and Minneapolis, MN. He currently performs with the Lynchburg improv troupe Adults With Crayons. Joe was a founding member of the Syracuse Improv Collective, producing comedy variety shows and developing an improv training center. He co-directed the Thumbs UPstate Improv Festival in Syracuse from 2011 – 2014. In addition to teaching improv classes at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, he has taught improv classes and workshops in his communities and enjoys helping others discover the magic of improv.

In this fun and fully interactive class, learn to make your own mosaic art pieces, with instructor, Kim Clarke. We will be working using the direct method. Choose from several project bases (mirror, address number plaques, frames etc). All bases and materials are included, along with colored glass, adhesives and grout. Use the wide array of colored glass and mirror tiles provided or bring in your own tiles, bases other fun items that can be used in mosaics. Great for beginners. **A $15 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first night of class. Artist Bio: Kim Clarke originally from California has been a teacher and artist for many years. She has an artistic style which is very fun and whimsical. Kim’s art pieces reside in galleries and private collections all over the world including France and Australia. Upon visiting Lynchburg she discovered the Pottery Studio at the Academy center and loved it.  Her passion for clay, mosaics, and pottery brought her to teaching classes and workshops there. She now calls Virginia home.

Drawing Still Life with Pastels

Instructor: Julianne Godine Students will learn how to create form through the careful observation of the objects’ tones and colors through medium of pastels. Materials needed: Set of 12 basic soft chalk pastels 80lb paper or pastel paper, half a sheet (12” x 18”), plus a few extra sheets Box of soft vine charcoal Extra paper to cut into small pieces for practice Artist’s Bio: Juliann Godine is an award-winning portrait artist. She teaches art part-time at Appomattox County High School. Previously, she offered classes in pastel and oils for adults and weekly summer art programs for kids at McGuffey Art Center. She has also taught art in Fluvanna County, Albemarle County and taught studio art and photography at the Renaissance School where she was the artist-in-residence. Ms. Godine’s portraits and paintings reflect her classical training at the New York Academy of Art in New York City, and her work hangs in private and institutional collections including those of Louis Gossett Jr. and the University of Virginia, Rotunda and Medical Center. Learn hand building and enjoy advanced projects according to skill level.   Artist’s Bio Prior to her current position as art teacher at Heritage High School, Ruth Glaze has taught full time as Professor of Art at Judson College, Mississippi College, and Liberty University.  She received a Master of Education in Art from Mississippi College with a focus in pottery.  Exhibitions of her work include galleries in Missouri, Alabama, and Mississippi. Intaglio Printmaking – Drypoint Etching

Instructor: Justin Rice Explore the creative mark making possibilities through the drypoint process. Students will create prints using copper plates and a variety of printmaking tools. Utilizing the printing press, these plates will be used to edition a unique graphic created by each of the participants. Open to all skill levels. Artist’s Bio: Justin Rice is a multi disciplinary artist working with drawing, printmaking, woodworking and ceramics. He earned his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, majoring in Drawing with a concentration in Printmaking. His large scale drawings, woodblock prints and etchings explore the narrative world of graphic mark making.  Justin is a founding member and co-owner of Oxide Pottery in Lynchburg VA. He has been a full time potter and instructor for 10 years. His work is carried in galleries and museum shops across the United States, most notably: Museum of Art and Design NY, Baltimore Museum of Art, American Folk Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Art and American Visionary Art Museum.
