Historic Academy Theatre, 524 Main Street
Lynchburg, VA 24504 United States
+ Google Map

Coming to America Film Screening     The Academy Center of the Arts presents an interactive tribute to the John Landis legendary comedy, Coming to America, starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall.   The film tells the story of Prince Akeem (Murphy) of Zamunda who on his 21st birthday is to marry and spend the rest of his life with a woman he’s never met. Instead, Akeem breaks with tradition and travels to America with his trusty right-hand man Semmi (Hall) to find true love. The ensuing culture shock of the guileless pair navigating the gritty streets of ’80s NYC is pure comedy gold.   In addition to the film screening and nods to Zamunda, McDowell’s, and Soul Glow, the Academy will also raise funds to benefit the Jubilee Family Development Center by transforming the Theatre into a barber shop from 5:30pm to 7:30pm that evening.   A limited number of “Premium Cuts” will be available from Director's Cut Barbershop. All funds raised from the Premium Cuts will benefit the Jubilee Center and their mission of supporting and teaching families to become self-sufficient, reliable, successful members of society.   Consider this your royal invitation to laugh, support a great cause,…

PJ Morton with Free Union

Joy & Lynch Christian Warehouse Theatre, 519 Commerce Street
Lynchburg, VA 24504 United States

Warehouse Concert Series: PJ Morton with Free Union     About the Show:   It all starts and ends with the music. For PJ Morton, the songs, records, and shows say everything that needs to be said -- and more. Whether performing, playing, or producing, the GRAMMY® Award- and Dove® Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, Morton Records founder, and Maroon 5 keyboardist fills one timeless role most comfortably, that of a "Music Man." In doing so, he consistently crafts work of a classic caliber on stage and in the studio. "I've been blessed to communicate through songs better than words or anything else," he admits. "I believe in the power of music and honesty. When those two things come together, there's nothing more powerful. I endeavor to be a true 'Music Man' who loves these instruments and the lineage that got us here. It doesn't matter if I'm putting out another artist on my label, making material of my own, producing someone else, or in Maroon 5, I'm a 'Music Man' in every way." 2019 upheld this claim for Morton. Recorded live in New York and released under his own New Orleans-based Morton Records, Gumbo Unplugged garnered three 2019 GRAMMY® Award nominations -- "Best R&B Album," "Best Traditional…

Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest Presents: Mr. Jefferon's Salon Series, A Conversation on Race & Democracy     Jefferson wrote the immortal words of the Declaration of Independence that have inspired people throughout the world to work for democracy. He also enslaved black men, women and children throughout his life and was convinced that when the enslaved were finally emancipated, blacks and whites could never live together.   Nearly 200 years after Jefferson’s death, how has the legacy of racial slavery shaped our democracy?   A panel of notable scholars will help us think through this question. They include: Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Dr. David Blight, Dr. Martha S. Jones, and Dr. Peter S. Onuf.   The panel will be moderated by Dr. Edward Ayers, Tucker-Boatwright Professor of the Humanities and president emeritus at the University of Richmond and one of the cohosts for BackStory, a popular podcast about American history.   Join us after the salon for a recepetion in the lobby of the Historic Academy Theatre where the conversations can continue.   Light hors-d’oeuvres will be provided.     Tickets:   Students under 17: $16.00 Adults: $32.00   For more information or to purchase tickets to this event…

Remaining tickets will be released to the public on Tuesday, July 16, 2019.     About the Show:   The Sensational Soul Cruisers are not just another 11-man vocal harmony group with horns. While it is still sometimes possible to find a band featuring a similar line up of instruments, it is unlikely that you will ever find another that performs with as much energy, passion, and talent as these guys. From their humble beginnings rehearsing at the chicken coops on Route 33 to the basement of the Cycle Shop on Throckmorton Street, this band has come a long way from its “Eddie and the Cruisers” days to become one of Jersey’s best kept secrets.   Under the tutelage of legendary Jersey Shore sax player Screamin’ Steve Barlotta, who has been the captain of this fantastic soul cruise for over 20 years, has catapulted this band from the recesses of a dingy basement to over 200 performances a year while capturing the true essence of the Jersey Shore sound and its true R&B roots. Fortunately for those…
