Palette Knife Painting: Winter Landscapes

Instructor: Alice Glass Students will work alongside artist Alice Glass as she takes them through her process of painting with a palette knife. The instructor will use a landscape as her inspiration for this piece and will show students how she utilizes different techniques to create her art. Much of this class will be demonstration based but students will come out with their own paintings by the end of class. Supplies are included. Artist’s Bio: Raised in a family brimming with commercial and fine artists, Alice Glass has always had a deep love for art, but didn’t start painting until early 2015. Her first experimental paintings gave way to a variety of subject matter including abstracts, florals, landscapes, Mediterranean villages, beaches, still life, and commissioned pieces of family houses and pets. Most of Alice’s work features bright and colorful acrylic paint on canvas, and most of her work is produced exclusively with her favorite selection of palette knives. Alice’s style is to quickly create her subject matter with broad painterly strokes leaving thick, expressive bands and pods of colors mixed on her palette board as well as the canvas itself.   Looney Tunes Marathon Free screening of 8 classic Looney Tune cartoons followed by the animated film Space Jam     Join the Academy and a special, anonymous Advocate for the Arts, as we host a Looney Tunes Marathon on Saturday, January 11, 2020, in the Historic Academy Theatre.   Grab a plush theatre seat and enjoy 8 classic Looney Tunes cartoons, followed by the 1996 film Space Jam. Concessions will be sold. Tickets to this event are FREE but must be reserved.  Tickets are limited to the first 600 patrons. Please bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Knights of Columbus food drive to benefit local food banks. Mosaic Madness

In this fun and fully interactive class, learn to make your own mosaic art pieces, with instructor, Kim Clarke. We will be working using the direct method. Choose from several project bases (mirror, address number plaques, frames etc). All bases and materials are included, along with colored glass, adhesives and grout. Use the wide array of colored glass and mirror tiles provided or bring in your own tiles, bases other fun items that can be used in mosaics. Great for beginners. **A $15 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first night of class. Artist Bio: Kim Clarke originally from California has been a teacher and artist for many years. She has an artistic style which is very fun and whimsical. Kim’s art pieces reside in galleries and private collections all over the world including France and Australia. Upon visiting Lynchburg she discovered the Pottery Studio at the Academy center and loved it.  Her passion for clay, mosaics, and pottery brought her to teaching classes and workshops there. She now calls Virginia home.

Instructor: Kim Clarke Ready to try your hand at the potter’s wheel? There will be helpful demonstrations and lots of hands-on time in this session. You will be learning the basics of wheel throwing, hand building, and surface decoration in this fun and casual class, taught by instructor Kim Clarke. You will get some tips and tricks that will help you create some beautiful pottery! This is a great way for you to take a break and explore your creative side in this fun introduction to clay. No experience needed! Tuition includes a 25 lb. bag of clay and glaze and firing costs. Artist Bio: Kim Clarke originally from California has been a teacher and artist for many years. Solly continued her art education in classes with Ralph Smith, Ernest Johnson, Frank Webb, Don Andrews, Serge Hollerbach and Tony Couch. In recent years, Solly became interested in oil painting and studied with local artists Bertha Crockett and Rosalie Day White.
