Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest Presents: Mr. Jefferon’s Salon Series, A Conversation on Race & Democracy

September 26 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Historic Academy Theatre, 524 Main Street
Lynchburg, VA 24504 United States
+ Google Map

Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest Presents: Mr. Jefferon's Salon Series, A Conversation on Race & Democracy     Jefferson wrote the immortal words of the Declaration of Independence that have inspired people throughout the world to work for democracy. He also enslaved black men, women and children throughout his life and was convinced that when the enslaved were finally emancipated, blacks and whites could never live together.   Nearly 200 years after Jefferson’s death, how has the legacy of racial slavery shaped our democracy?   A panel of notable scholars will help us think through this question. They include: Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Dr. David Blight, Dr. Martha S. Jones, and Dr. Peter S. Onuf.   The panel will be moderated by Dr. Edward Ayers, Tucker-Boatwright Professor of the Humanities and president emeritus at the University of Richmond and one of the cohosts for BackStory, a popular podcast about American history.   Join us after the salon for a recepetion in the lobby of the Historic Academy Theatre where the conversations can continue.   Light hors-d’oeuvres will be provided.     Tickets:   Students under 17: $16.00 Adults: $32.00   For more information or to purchase tickets to this event…

Join Artist Robin Wellner from North Carolina for a unique opportunity to learn in her advanced Alla Prima painting workshop! Painting portraits is challenging — but incredibly rewarding! Simplifying your palette to something you know works will give you freedom to concentrate on other aspects of the portrait. Anders Zorn’s limited palette of white, black, yellow ochre and cadmium red will give you a beautiful range of skin tones and virtually guarantee color harmony. Each morning of this three day workshop begins with instruction and a demo painted from a live model. After lunch, everyone will have the opportunity to paint the model with lots of one-on-one instruction. We will focus on color, values, facial features and how to measure to achieve a likeness; as well, as learning to paint shapes rather than lines. **Oil painting experience required. Supply list: Alla Prima Information & Materials List “This is a challenging class. Robin made it a great class with her demos, clarity of teaching, books, handouts and her own paintings for inspiration. She gives equal care to each class member, as well as her positive spirit and good nature. Her laughter is good medicine and helped us through the pain of…

Remaining tickets will be released to the public on Tuesday, July 16, 2019.     About the Show:   The Sensational Soul Cruisers are not just another 11-man vocal harmony group with horns. While it is still sometimes possible to find a band featuring a similar line up of instruments, it is unlikely that you will ever find another that performs with as much energy, passion, and talent as these guys. From their humble beginnings rehearsing at the chicken coops on Route 33 to the basement of the Cycle Shop on Throckmorton Street, this band has come a long way from its “Eddie and the Cruisers” days to become one of Jersey’s best kept secrets.   Under the tutelage of legendary Jersey Shore sax player Screamin’ Steve Barlotta, who has been the captain of this fantastic soul cruise for over 20 years, has catapulted this band from the recesses of a dingy basement to over 200 performances a year while capturing the true essence of the Jersey Shore sound and its true R&B roots.
