To place your name on a waiting list, call (434) 846-8499.       About the Show:   Cirque-Tacular’s Art of Circus, featuring dazzling circus performers, dancers and acrobats, comes to the Historic Academy Theatre on Friday, May 24, 2019, bringing 30 iconic paintings to life through incredible acrobatics.   Presented by Cirque-tacular Entertainment, come see a fresh take on various styles, time periods, and stories that influenced the creation of beloved images. Audiences visually enter the worlds and works of Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Warhol, and more in an acrobatic fantasy vision.   Met Opera Broadcast in HD: Dialogues des Carmélites     The Academy Center of the Arts continues the Metropolitan Opera HD Broadcast series, featuring Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at 2:00pm in the Historic Academy Theatre.   The Academy is excited to offer HD Broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera's performances throughout the year in the Historic Academy of Music Theatre. Stay tuned for the upcoming schedule of Met Opera performances in 2019.   While the French Revolution rages without, the lives of the nuns in a Carmelite monastery are first shaken, then destroyed by the conflict between faith and politics.  A devastating final scene of multiple executions by guillotine is preceded by life-and-death encounters within cloistered walls.   Philip Garmey will host the upcoming Opera on the James Pre-Show Talk, beginning at 1:00pm. This pre-show event is free to all and included in your ticket price.   Academy Presents: Richard Marx       Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums, owns 26 top 20 singles and 17 top 10s and, as a songwriter, earned a Grammy for song of the year. He’s also the writer of fourteen number one songs.   As a performer, songwriter and producer, Richard Marx’s nearly three-decade-long career has had plenty of highlights.   The Final Salute: D-Day Plus 75 Years OFF-SITE PARTNER EVENT   NOTE: This event is held at the National D-Day Memorial     June 6, 2019 marks the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, a milestone that is expected to represent the last large gathering of D-Day veterans around the globe.  Events are planned throughout the day.   Aerial Tribute to WWII Veterans – 10:00 a.m. –  Join us as WWII aircraft take to the sky in a breathtaking display and pay tribute to the Greatest Generation who flew them.   “The Final Salute” Commemorative Observance – 11:00 a.m. – The ceremony will include international dignitaries, special music, and Normandy veteran roll-call.   On-Site Commemoration Activities – 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. – Throughout the day, explore WWII re-enactor displays of units who landed on D-Day; visit “Profiles of Honor,” the mobile museum dedicated to Virginia’s WWI and WWII veterans; enjoy music from the Enduring Freedom band and USO show; gather with WWII and D-Day veterans in the Veterans Reunion Tent; and partake in our food truck area that is open for breakfast and lunch.   Learn more at www.dday.org/event/the-final-salute-d-day-plus-75-years/

  Saving Private Ryan Film Screening     In honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the Academy Center of the Arts and our sponsors are showing a free screening of the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’ in the Historic Academy Theatre for the community.   The film tells the story of Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks), who leads a platoon of GIs during the D-Day invasion of Normandy near the end of World War II. Their initial mission, along with nearly 175,000 other Allied service men, is to liberate France and defeat the Nazis. After getting themselves off Omaha Beach, Miller is able to push his platoon up over the ridge and into the French countryside.   Just a few days into the invasion, Captain Miller receives revised orders from high command. His new mission: locate and rescue Private First Class James F. Ryan (played by Matt Damon), whose three brothers had been killed in the war within a few months of each other. Private Ryan was what was known as a “sole-surviving son” and the War Department wanted him back with his mother. The problem was, the U.S. Army didn’t know exactly where he was. In the film,…
