First Fridays: Virtual Edition

March 27, 2020

Welcome to the Academy Center of the Arts’ First Fridays: Virtual Edition, sponsored by Select Bank, featuring Andrew Wild’s “Beauty Stacked in My Backyard” Exhibition.

While our galleries are currently closed to the public as COVID-19 impacts our community, it is important that the arts and our artist’s work remain accessible, so we are sharing this month’s gallery exhibit with you virtually!

Venture through this Virtual Exhibition or visit the Harington Gallery Building 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday to see additional July Exhibitions in-person.

About the Exhibition:

This portfolio is meant to focus attention on the beauty that surrounds us, even in our own backyards. To remind us that we are but a small portion of the many creatures that inhabit even our backyards. That Diversity is what makes it all work.

Each of these images was created using focus stacking — a process of combining many photos at slightly progressively different focal points. This has two results that I find enhance the beauty of small objects. First, it increases the Depth of Field, making more of the object in focus, or allowing the photographer to better choose the plane of focus. Second, if a small aperture is chosen, then the space beyond the focus will be very out of focus, thus isolating the object of desire. It is a time consuming process that has many potential failure points along the way. Each individual component photograph  must have the same exposure, with zero movement in order to blend successfully. Most often this level of control is accomplished in a controlled studio environment. Not with these images, which where done outside in my backyard. The resulting final images are composed of anywhere from 4 to 226 separate photos.

May these images bring you a small amount of peace and remind us that we must cherish the gifts that the world has given us.

Printed images available. Prints only, without matte or frame.
