Matt Gulley - “Unafraid of Color: Atmospheres and Objects from the American South" - Oil Paintings
May 3 - June 1
May 3, 5-8 pm
Bio: Always a creative soul, growing up in Richmond Matt spent hours drawing and sketching the colonial buildings and gardens of Tidewater Virginia. After studying art at the University of Virginia, he took a long artistic hiatus as he moved and worked throughout the South and Southwest. Completing graduate work at VCU in 2013 left him searching for more creative endeavors leading him back to drawing. A logical progression to oil painting quickly followed as the world of color beckoned him to explore, embrace, and express this medium, one of the noblest of all art forms. And he hasn’t looked back. Artist Statement: In the American South, the humidity and proximity to water affect color unlike other parts of North America. Blues and violets are prominent…deeper, over-arching and spilling into neighboring colors with ease and gentility. Lines become blurred. The color spectrum mixes and flirts with reckless abandon. Viridian and magenta coexist as naturally as greens, pinks, and turquoise. I have purposefully curated each image and color in Unafraid of Color: Atmospheres and Objects from the American South. Each piece bears the name of a color I regularly employ that also enlivens and sustains that particular work. The colors that permeate and define the Southern spectrum. While some subjects presented are quite literal, some are metaphorical, even allegorical. I assure the viewer they all belong.
