To celebrate Summer, we're opening up the Historic Academy Theatre courtyard and bringing Happy Hour outside! Take in the sunshine while enjoying cold beverages and live music in our private beer garden on Main Street from 5:00pm - 8:00pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.   Drink specials will be served. Tours of the theatre will be given inside and will begin at 6:00pm. Tours run on a 45-minute schedule.   This event is FREE and open to the public.   Sponsored By:       Parking:   Parking is available on-site and throughout downtown Lynchburg. The parking map above shows all of the free public and paid parking available. Coming to America Film Screening     The Academy Center of the Arts presents an interactive tribute to the John Landis legendary comedy, Coming to America, starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall.   The film tells the story of Prince Akeem (Murphy) of Zamunda who on his 21st birthday is to marry and spend the rest of his life with a woman he’s never met. Instead, Akeem breaks with tradition and travels to America with his trusty right-hand man Semmi (Hall) to find true love. Our keynote speaker will be Daniel Carey, M.D., Virginia's Secretary of Health and Human Resources, who will talk about recovery in the Commonwealth. Remaining tickets will be released to the public on June 14, 2019.       About the Show:   Ira Glass is the host and creator of the public radio program This American Life. The show is heard each week by over 2.2 million listeners on more than 500 public radio stations, with another 2.5 million downloading each podcast. He’s also one of the editors of the podcasts Serial and S-Town. Glass began his career as an intern at National Public Radio's network headquarters in Washington, DC in 1978, when he was 19 years old. Over the years, he worked on nearly every NPR network news program and held virtually every production job in NPR's Washington headquarters. He has been a tape cutter, newscast writer, desk assistant, editor, reporter and producer. He has filled in as host of Talk of the Nation and Weekend All Things Considered. He put This American Life on the air in 1995.   Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin Together on Stage   A City Auditorium Presents show   Tickets will be released to the public on April 12, 2019.     Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin will embark on a series of tour dates throughout the fall of 2019. Carpenter and Colvin—longtime friends for over 30 years—will appear on stage together as an intimate acoustic duo, swapping songs and sharing stories. These special shows will feature the acclaimed songwriters performing material from their vast catalogues as well as some of their favorite songs.   Carpenter and Colvin previously toured together in 2013 to the delight of both fans and critics. Audiences were invited to share the artists’ “living room” as they played music and traded quips in a warm, comfortable setting inspired by the duo’s long-lasting camaraderie.   Over the course of her acclaimed career, Mary Chapin Carpenter has sold over 14 million records.
