The two met at a square dance, began collaborating musically and eventually fell in love. Over the years, they played together most visibly in the Sparrow Quartet alongside Ben Sollee and Casey Driessen and informally at a pickin’ party here, a benefit there, or occasionally popping up in each other’s solo shows. Fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare eagerly anticipated that Béla & Abigail would begin making music together as a duo.   Fleck has the virtuosic, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots. His collaborations range from his ground-breaking standard-setting ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones to…

Community Through Theatre Presents: Follies Book by James Goldman Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Produced Originally on Broadway by Harold Prince Orchestration by Jonathan Tunick     A true theatrical event, this legendary masterpiece is considered by many to be the greatest musical ever created. Surreal, sophisticated, compelling, heart wrenching and epic in scope, Follies by musical theatre legend, Stephen Sondheim, and author, James Goldman, uses the musical theatre as a metaphor for the collapse of American innocence and naiveté in the post-Kennedy years.   In Follies, the time is 1971, and theatrical impresario, Dimitri Weissmann, hosts a reunion of ex-Follies performers in his crumbling theatre, setting the stage for a parade of brilliant pastiche numbers, including "Losing My Mind," "I'm Still Here" and "Broadway Baby."   Academy Presents: Richard Marx       Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums, owns 26 top 20 singles and 17 top 10s and, as a songwriter, earned a Grammy for song of the year. He’s also the writer of fourteen number one songs.   As a performer, songwriter and producer, Richard Marx’s nearly three-decade-long career has had plenty of highlights. His self-titled debut went to #8 and spawned four Top 5 singles, including the chart-topping “Hold on to the Nights”.   The follow-up, Repeat Offender, was even more successful, hitting #1 and going quadruple-platinum with two #1 singles in “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.” When both Rush Street and Paid Vacation went platinum, Marx achieved a seven-year string of triumphs that rivaled any in pop-rock music history.   To mark the release of Rush Street, he embarked on a 24-hour, five-city blitz on MGM Grand Airlines, performing at every stop, a record that has yet to be broken. To this day, he is the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 on the Billboard charts.   Richard remains active as a live performer, with an ongoing solo acoustic…

Their initial mission, along with nearly 175,000 other Allied service men, is to liberate France and defeat the Nazis. After getting themselves off Omaha Beach, Miller is able to push his platoon up over the ridge and into the French countryside.   Just a few days into the invasion, Captain Miller receives revised orders from high command. His new mission: locate and rescue Private First Class James F. Ryan (played by Matt Damon), whose three brothers had been killed in the war within a few months of each other. Private Ryan was what was known as a “sole-surviving son” and the War Department wanted him back with his mother. The problem was, the U.S. Army didn’t know exactly where he was. In the film,…

Coming to America Film Screening     The Academy Center of the Arts presents an interactive tribute to the John Landis legendary comedy, Coming to America, starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall.   The film tells the story of Prince Akeem (Murphy) of Zamunda who on his 21st birthday is to marry and spend the rest of his life with a woman he’s never met.   Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest Presents: Mr. Jefferon's Salon Series, A Conversation on Race & Democracy     Jefferson wrote the immortal words of the Declaration of Independence that have inspired people throughout the world to work for democracy. He also enslaved black men, women and children throughout his life and was convinced that when the enslaved were finally emancipated, blacks and whites could never live together.   Nearly 200 years after Jefferson’s death, how has the legacy of racial slavery shaped our democracy?   A panel of notable scholars will help us think through this question. They include: Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Dr. David Blight, Dr. Martha S. Jones, and Dr. Peter S. Onuf.   The panel will be moderated by Dr. Edward Ayers, Tucker-Boatwright Professor of the Humanities and president emeritus at the University of Richmond and one of the cohosts for BackStory, a popular podcast about American history.   Join us after the salon for a recepetion in the lobby of the Historic Academy Theatre where the conversations can continue.   Light hors-d’oeuvres will be provided.     Tickets:   Students under 17: $16.00 Adults: $32.00   For more information or to purchase tickets to this event…

Academy Presents: Destination Motown featuring the Soul Cruisers       About the Show:   The Sensational Soul Cruisers are not just another 11-man vocal harmony group with horns. While it is still sometimes possible to find a band featuring a similar line up of instruments, it is unlikely that you will ever find another that performs with as much energy, passion, and talent as these guys. From their humble beginnings rehearsing at the chicken coops on Route 33 to the basement of the Cycle Shop on Throckmorton Street, this band has come a long way from its “Eddie and the Cruisers” days to become one of Jersey’s best kept secrets.   Under the tutelage of legendary Jersey Shore sax player Screamin’ Steve Barlotta, who has been the captain of this fantastic soul cruise for over 20 years, has catapulted this band from the recesses of a dingy basement to over 200 performances a year while capturing the true essence of the Jersey Shore sound and its true R&B roots. Fortunately for those of us that feel that the sound of classic Philly Soul, Motown, Disco, Stax, and the music of The Temptations, Four Tops, Earth Wind & Fire,…

Academy Presents: Steep Canyon Rangers     About the Show:   With OUT IN THE OPEN, Steep Canyon Rangers affirm their place as one of the most versatile bands in contemporary American music. The GRAMMY® Award-winning sextet has spent nearly two decades bending and shaping the bluegrass aesthetic, wedding it to elements of pop, country, and folk rock to create something original. OUT IN THE OPEN is the Rangers bravest excursion thus far, transcending bluegrass while also getting closest to the genre’s true form thanks to 3x GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Joe Henry’s traditional approach toward recording.   Since Steep Canyon Rangers came together in 2000, they have developed a remarkable catalogue of original music that links them to the past while also demonstrating their ambitious intent to bring string-based music into contemporary relevance.   In July 2017, Steep Canyon Rangers arrived at Fidelitorium Recordings, an intimate studio facility built, owned, and operated by legendary producer Mitch Easter. The band soon discovered that their producer – along with engineer/mixer Jason Richmond – intended to record all six members singing and playing in a room with no overdubs. The organic process allowed SCR to work fast, tracking a dozen songs in just three-and-a-half…
