Euphonic Sounds: The Classic Rags of Scott Joplin and His Contemporaries

October 6, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Joy & Lynch Christian Warehouse Theatre, 519 Commerce Street
Lynchburg, VA 24504 United States
+ Google Map

This concert is a part of the Blue Ridge Ragtime and Silent Film Festival, hosted in Lynchburg, Virginia, from October 6 - 8. The Blue Ridge Ragtime Festival’s kickoff concert celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Scott Joplin. The success of his “Maple Leaf Rag” established Joplin as “the King of Ragtime Composers” in his own time, and the use of his music (including “The Entertainer”) in the film The Sting more than 70 years later introduced his music to a new generation and helped to launch a nationwide ragtime revival. Joplin’s piano music, while rhythmic and engaging, is also supremely lyrical, brimming with bittersweet melodies. Join festival entertainers Frederick Hodges, Ethan Uslan, Martin Spitznagel, Bryan Wright, and Bill Edwards for an unforgettable evening of Joplin’s classic rags, along with a few by his contemporaries. Tickets for this event are $15.00 and can be purchased online or by calling (434) 846-8499. Parking and Directions

Pulled directly from the stories of O. Henry, the Gifts of the Magi is set in New York City around the turn of the 20th century.  Christmas is approaching, but for one young couple (Jim and Della) the prospects for celebration are bleak, as both are out of work and penniless.  The thread of their story is woven by newsboy-narrator Willy, who guides us along our journey with Jim and Della while introducing us to various city folk going about their holiday business, as well as the amusing plight of a cheerful bum named Soapy who longs to be arrested.  A simple story about the consequences and significance of the act of giving, The Gifts of the Magi creates an aura of warmth in the cold, impersonal winter city.   SHOWS Thursday, November 30 |  7:00pm Friday, December 1 |  7:00pm Saturday, December 2  |  7:00pm Sunday, December 3 | 2:00pm TICKETS $12 students $14 seniors $17 adults All tickets for this show will be sold through academycenter.org and…

The Academy Center of the Arts and Innovative Wireless Technologies present the Academy Children's Theatre production of Getting to Know Cinderella, this August!   AboutGetting to Know Cinderella: In this specially created G2K version, all the beloved songs and familiar characters are present and accounted for. However, the entire script has been condensed to better suit young attention spans, and the plot has been slightly altered so as to highlight some important lessons that exist in this timeless tale. The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.   Tickets: All tickets:…

Master showman Harold Hill is in town and he’s got “seventy-six trombones” in tow. Can upright, uptight Marian, the town librarian, resist his powerful allure?  The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he vows to organize. The Downtown Actors present HAIRSPRAY the Musical at the Academy Center of the Arts this August.   About HAIRSPRAY the Musical: It’s 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, and quirky, plus-sized, teenage Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on The Corny Collins Show. When she gets put in detention with the African-American students in the school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her new found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show. Overnight, Tracy transforms from a nobody into a star, and uses her newfound influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show. Tracy faces scrutiny and bullying from the network producer, Velma, and her popular, but vicious, daughter, Amber. With the help of the teenage heartthrob Link, host Corny Collins, and Motormouth Maybelle (the host of ‘Negro Day’), Tracy overcomes the odds and succeeds in her mission to integrate The Corny Collins Show. Tony Award-winning Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today, not only because of its wit and charm, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays. The bright, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad teaches us all to look past the color of one’s skin and fight for every human…

Recorded live in New York and released under his own New Orleans-based Morton Records, Gumbo Unplugged garnered three 2019 GRAMMY® Award nominations -- "Best R&B Album," "Best Traditional…
