Opera on the James Presents: La Boheme

Time: November 8 @ 7:30 pm - November 10 @ 3:00 pm
Venue: Historic Academy Theatre

This famous opera has inspired movies (Moonstruck, Moulin Rouge) and even a Broadway show (Rent)! La Bohème (pronounced LAH BOH-EMM) is The Bohemian Girl, Mimi. On Christmas Eve, she falls in love with a handsome young writer, Rodolfo. He and his buddies are “bohemians,” free spirits who laugh at respectability and hard work. They spend most of their time in the cafes of Paris, debating about love, art and the meaning of life while snatching a free drink wherever they can. Marcello is a painter, passionately in love with Musetta, a girl who wants more luxury than he can provide. She actually loves him too, but neither of them can quite give up their freedom and commit to an exclusive relationship. Colline is a classic nerd, a lonely philosopher whose only comfort is his beloved warm coat. The only one who makes any money is the musician, Schaunard. Everyone is glad to see him when he returns from a paying gig with plenty to eat and drink. When illness strikes Mimi, everyone must face some unavoidable realities. Puccini’s melodies tug at the heart, bringing both smiles and tears.
