Summer Visual Arts Programming Intern

Location: Academy Center of the Arts, Lynchburg, Virginia

Duration: Tuesday, June 4 – Friday, July 12 (break from June 24 -July 7)

Stipend: $350 plus 20 hours of community service credit

Reports To: Chief Programming Officer

Position Overview:

The Academy Center of the Arts seeks passionate and organized interns to support our dynamic Summer Visual Arts Programming. This internship is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in the arts, education, health, medicine, art therapy, or nursing. The intern will play a crucial role in organizing our art studio, assisting with the organization and implementation of lesson plans, and participating in community events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Studio Organization: Assist in the organization and maintenance of the art and pottery studios to ensure a productive environment for creativity and learning.
  • Lesson Planning: Help organize lesson plans and materials for various classes and workshops offered during the summer. Ensure materials and resources are prepared for instructors and participants.
  • Event Assistance: Support the coordination and execution of community events hosted at off-campus locations. Tasks may include setting up, welcoming guests, and providing information about our programs and exhibitions.
  • OMA Program Participation: Participate in the “Open Minds Art” (OMA) program, which includes a 3-hour training session and a 4-week commitment. This program is designed to enhance your understanding of the impact of visual arts on people living with dementia and the importance of accessibility and inclusion in the arts.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned, including administrative support, customer service, and engagement with artists and community members.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in or recent graduation from an undergraduate program related to art, education, or a related field.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Passion for the arts and community engagement.
  • Prior experience in an educational, medical or arts setting is a plus.
