Challenge: Create a functional or nonfunctional teapot! Inspired by the Great Pottery Throwdown. You can throw your teapot on the wheel, hand build it, or use a combination of both techniques. Let your creativity shine!
Friday, June 28, 6:00-9:00 pm: Introduction, saftey briefing, and overview of the challenge. Demonstration of throwing and handbuilding techniques for teapots. Participants start working on their teapots.
Saturday, June 29, 10:00am to 3:00pm (bring lunch or food to share). Continued work on teapots, with individual guidance from instructor. Refinement and finishing touches. All teapots ready for firing.
Saturday, July 13, 10:00am to 2:00 pm: Unveiling of the bisque fired teapots! Glazing session, where you will choose glazes, stains and underglazes to bring your teapots to life.
Competition: Teapots will be judged on the following criteria: Functionality: does your teapot poor smoothly and hold tea effectively? For nonfunction tea pots, creativity and design. Technique: demonstrates good use of throwing and/or handbuilding skills. Overall Aesthetics: Is the teapot visually appealing and well-finished? Prizes awarded for the top three teapots!
Instructor: Kim Clarke
Kim Clarke originally from California has been a teacher and artist for many years.
She has an artistic style which is very fun and whimsical. Kim’s art pieces reside in galleries and private collections all over the world including France and Australia.
Upon visiting Lynchburg she discovered the Pottery Studio at the Academy center and loved it. Her passion for clay, mosaics, and pottery brought her to teaching classes and workshops there. She now calls Virginia home.
