Artist Statement for “Indwelling”

Landscapes are my visual language. These images are interpretations of places I’ve experiencedand they are also reflective of the interior “landscape.” This body of work began as expressions of presence and absence, of grief and loss. subtle shifting states that evolved, more broadly, into meditations on being. As the work developed and the seasons changed, I was surprised to find myself painting vibrant landscapes. These paintings grew in number as did questions about the value of making “beautiful” images. And yet, alongside the un-beautiful—and perhaps especially when there is so much that is un-beautiful—remembering and celebrating beauty helps hold the balance. In fact, there is no division: everything is an expression of life.
