Lynchburg VA center for arts, culture, and community building
Showcased in our Anne White Gallery are the evocative works of Karen and Lawrence Bowden, two artists whose creative visions explore vastly different yet deeply resonant themes. Karen Bowden’s watercolor and ink creations capture quiet moments of everyday beauty with expressive lines, delicate palettes, and a whimsical sense of intimacy. Her scenes often feel like snapshots of fleeting emotions—thoughtful, gentle, and grounded in human connection.
In contrast, Lawrence Bowden’s series Gentling the Bull takes viewers on a contemplative, symbolic journey through a visual interpretation of the 12th-century Zen parable “Ten Ox-Herding Pictures.” These ten paintings map out the spiritual path toward enlightenment, echoing a narrative arc similar to the Christian Stations of the Cross—one that moves from fragmentation to wholeness, from confusion to serenity. Through bold imagery and thoughtful symbolism, Lawrence invites viewers into a reflective exploration of inner peace and the universal quest for self-realization.
