This beginner-friendly series introduces adults to the fundamentals of handmade book arts.  Led by artist and mentor Toby Penney, each class offers a relaxed, creative environment where you’ll learn simple folded and stitched book structures that are perfect for journals, portfolios, keepsakes, and more. No prior experience is needed.

This class is ideal for absolute beginners as well as artists looking to expand their creative toolkit. You’ll explore accessible materials and techniques while receiving clear, step-by-step guidance. Toby provides individualized support to help you build confidence as you create a small collection of functional, beautifully crafted books.

What you’ll learn:
• How to create simple folded book forms
• Techniques for stitching basic book structures
• Tips for selecting papers and materials
• How to design handmade books for journaling, portfolios, and creative projects
• Ideas for personalizing your books through layout, texture, and small design details

By the end of the series, you’ll have completed multiple handmade books and gained the foundational skills needed to continue bookmaking in our studio or at home.

We’ll provide all the materials you need, but feel free to bring along:
• Any favorite papers or decorative materials
• Personal cutting tools or rulers (optional)
• A sketchbook or journal for notes and planning

This class pairs beautifully with Block Printing and Creative Mindfulness: Visual Journaling for those interested in expanding their creative expression across multiple mediums.
