This class is ideal for absolute beginners as well as artists looking to expand their creative toolkit. You’ll explore accessible materials and techniques while receiving clear, step-by-step guidance. Toby provides individualized support to help you build confidence as you create a small collection of functional, beautifully crafted books.
What you’ll learn:
• How to create simple folded book forms
• Techniques for stitching basic book structures
• Tips for selecting papers and materials
• How to design handmade books for journaling, portfolios, and creative projects
• Ideas for personalizing your books through layout, texture, and small design details
By the end of the series, you’ll have completed multiple handmade books and gained the foundational skills needed to continue bookmaking in our studio or at home.
We’ll provide all the materials you need, but feel free to bring along:
• Any favorite papers or decorative materials
• Personal cutting tools or rulers (optional)
• A sketchbook or journal for notes and planning

Instructor Bio :
Toby Penney is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in painting and printmaking. With a B.F.A. in Sculpture from Middle Tennessee State University and training at Internationally respected Harvey K. Littleton Studios, she brings a wealth of technical skill and creative insight to her work. Penney has exhibited internationally in locations like France, England, Australia, and the U.S., and has been featured on the covers of Professional Artist Magazine and Hellbent Magazine. She also serves as an art instructor and mentor, fostering creativity in her community and beyond through her Roaming Studio program.
