Woodblock Printing

Instructor: Justin Rice With the help of instructor Justin Rice, students will explore the world of graphic mark making through the use of hand carving tools, woodblocks and the printing press. This class will focus on the creation of an original high contrast single color editioned print. This class will cover the process from start to finish. Discussion will include block preparation, image transfer, carving technique, and printing by hand and with the use of a machine press. Relief Printing is open to beginning through advanced printmakers. This class will serve as the base course to the broad studio practice of printmaking. All supplies included. Artist’s Bio: Justin Rice is a multi disciplinary artist working with drawing, printmaking, woodworking and ceramics. He earned his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, majoring in Drawing with a concentration in Printmaking. His large scale drawings, woodblock prints and etchings explore the narrative world of graphic mark making.  Justin is a founding member and co-owner of Oxide Pottery in Lynchburg VA. Instructor: Arnulfo Jacinto This class is designed for beginner to advanced students who are seeking to express themselves through art while learning and building upon the basic principles and foundations of drawing, including grades of paper and pencils, light and shadow, and perspective. Basic life drawing and understanding of the human anatomy will be introduced by using wood figure models, photographs, and other reference materials. Students will work on drawing the skeletal and muscular structures of the human body and will gain an understanding of proportion, scale, and foreshortening. Because each student is unique, projects may be altered and one-on-one instruction will be given to suit each student’s skills, talents, knowledge, and interest level. Intermediate and more advanced students will learn hand building techniques with teacher Anna Ellis. Advanced students will continue to develop independent work supplemented with a demonstration each class. Demonstrations will cover use of under glazes, utilizing different techniques in a single piece, hand building larger, and complex forms. Students will be encouraged to develop a style with personal distinction motifs in order to complete a body of work by the end of the class.  Tuition includes a 25 lb. bag of clay and glaze and firing costs.

Instructor: Dana Alexa The Academy is thrilled to bring in dancer/choreographer Dana Alexa for a unique workshop opportunity. Participants receive two classes for $50 in Dana’s general style between the street jazz and commercial hip hop metric. The classes will be different from each other. Couples, singles, and friends are welcome to join us at The Academy Center of the Arts Pottery Studio for an evening of fun, romance and hand building a clay project. Instructor Anna Ellis will walk you through the simple steps of making a set of Monogrammed Mugs. Have something to remember your special Date Night for many years!   Beer, wine, light snacks, clay and tools are included. Wear or bring clothes to change into that you don’t mind getting dirty. The Art of Zentangle

Instructor: Laura Watts Do you want to find a creative outlet that doesn’t require huge amounts of artistic skill? Zentangle is a simple-to-learn and relaxing way to create beautiful art. In this introductory course, participants will learn the philosophy, method, and basic approach to creating Zentangle art. Using pen, paper, and easy-to-do doodles, watch as your tangles come to life! Artist’s Bio: Laura Watts is a former high school art teacher, graphic designer, and interior decorator. She currently, along with her husband Woody, own several creative based businesses (including ghost hunting). If you can’t find her crafting, soap making, or hand lettering, you may find her strolling along the avenue with her pups Ellie & Frances. Monoprinting

Instructor: Justin Rice Pull one of a kind prints utilizing an etching press and the mono print method. Participants will work directly on printing plates to create multi colored images. The techniques covered will provide working knowledge that can be applied to both relief and intaglio style methods. This class is open to beginners as well as seasoned printers looking to expand their graphic mark making vocabulary.
