ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Using acrylic paints on a black surface, either black gessoed Canvas or watercolor paper painted with black acrylic, build a beautiful range of value contrasts, running the gamut from white to black and mid-values in between. Bring reference photos oof any subject you wish, as long as it has darks and lights. I will be using a landscape with mountain stream. We will go over mixing paints, testing the values and application, with both brushes and old gift or credit cards as paint applicators.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Vera Dickerson lives with assorted cats in the countryside of Botetourt, Virginia. She helped form The Studio School a 501(c3) nonprofit school, in 1990 and continues to teach classes at its Roanoke Towers Mall location. Her career honors include signature membership in both American and National Watercolor Societies, as well as inclusion in Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who in American Women, and Who’s Who in the South and Southeast. “Art of some sort has been part of my life since childhood, as has the love of travel. I record and personalize these experiences as I work. With maturity, I have come to a better understanding of the scope and content beyond simple picture making so that I now want to put my emotional connections into my art. My belief is that art is an emotional expression which contains something of the hand and mind that has formed the painting. It should be personal, not just a surface “prettiness.”
