On Wednesday, our organization released a statement regarding the additional measures our staff is taking towards the potential impact of COVID-19 in our community.Today, in the interest of the health and welfare of our patrons, staff, volunteers, and performers, the Academy Center of the Arts has canceled all public performances through April 15, 2020.This decision is in line with public health guidelines regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus), as well as by the urgence of local and state authorities to limit large public events, effective immediately. While it’s disappointing to cancel upcoming events, we look forward to coming together again as a community when the time is right.At this time, our educational classes are also being suspended for the next two weeks, following an executive order by Governor Ralph Northam on March 13, 2020, in conjunction with the policies of the Lynchburg City School systems. Eduction participants will be updated as the situation evolves.Our gallery spaces will remain open during this time. Would you consider turning the value of your ticket purchase into a donation during this fragile period for the Academy?  A large portion of our annual revenue is generated through ticket sales and is critical to our ability to impact our community.   Met Opera Broadcast in HD: Tosca CANCELED EVENT   The Academy Center of the Arts has just announced the Metropolitan Opera HD Broadcast 19-20 season, featuring Tosca on Sunday, 4/19 at 2:00pm in the Historic Academy of Music Theatre.   Soprano Anna Netrebko, whom the New York Times hailed as “magnificent” when she made her role debut as Tosca in 2018, returns as Puccini’s explosive diva, back by popular demand. Tenors Najmiddin Mavlyanov and Brian Jagde alternate as the idealistic painter Cavaradossi, and baritones George Gagnidze and Michael Volle complete the opera’s fatal love triangle as the sinister Scarpia. Unfortunately, due to a lack of availability, this event is unable to be rescheduled at the Academy Center of the Arts. Join Artist Janet Rogers from Florida for a unique opportunity to learn in her advanced watercolor painting workshop! This workshop takes place April 29th and 30th, 9:30am – 4:30pm. Designed for participants of all levels, fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for this workshop. Janet will demonstrate various “fun” exercises geared to interpret flowers in a loose and expressive manner. Discovering the unique “nature” of individual flowers and “finding” new colors will be highlighted. Demonstrations and individual help will weave throughout the workshop, with an emphasis on letting the medium of watercolor lead the students to new adventures in watercolor. (PLEIN AIR – in studio!) Some goals include “keeping the whites”, avoiding “mud”, intuitive color and composition. Besides working with students individually and class demos, Janet and attendees will enjoy “Show and Tell” – an opportunity to see class work together and enjoy! Join Artist Janet Rogers from Florida for a unique opportunity to learn in her advanced watercolor painting workshop! This workshop takes place May 1st and 2nd, 9:30am – 4:30pm. This dynamic workshop is designed to enable participants of all levels to quickly gain confidence in approaching the head and figure in a more spontaneous, intuitive and expressive way. Demonstrations, class instruction, individual assistance, “show and tell”, and a series of “fun” exercises, will weave into class painting time. Special emphasis will be on achieving a fresh look of translucent flesh tones in the portrait with unique color changes, which will add to the excitement of capturing the essence of the subject. Capturing the essence of children will be included. Many “features” will be covered! All levels will benefit and help is available to those who are new to the portrait and figure. No Fear!! Students will have an opportunity to work from their photographs or Janet’s.
