Artist Statement

“For thousands of years the horse has been one of our closest and dearest allies. After we were successful in its domestication, it helped us to build civilizations all over the world. Presently, the horse is rarely utilized in daily life, functioning as an outmoded technology within our modern world. However, its presence remains strong within our collective imagination. The horse, and its image in particular, continues to offer us something truly invaluable. It has the power to connect us to nature and provide us with the chance to experience compassion and understanding. My current work focuses on the image of the horse, challenging our evolving perceptions of this animal and its legacy within our cultures.

For me the horse has been a life-long fascination. This obsession, fueled by the horse’s beauty and magical essence, remains largely mysterious to me, but continues to manifest itself through the act of making. In my current work I abstract the form of the horse. My goal is to create dynamic arrangements of form and space based on our human perception of movement and time. When painting I oscillate between modes of realism and abstraction, embracing spontaneity and the occasional serendipitous accident. This experimental and playful approach to painting generates a range of visual outcomes within my work.

The transformation that the horse undergoes in my paintings leads to images that continually surprise me and provide me with new perspectives on my subject. As a result of this studio process, the horse’s image confronts common stereotypes, becoming complicated and unfamiliar. Rather than the horse functioning as a symbol that accessories or elevates the status of a human being, it takes on an emotional weight and a compelling, lively energy that honors the animal itself. My hope is that these abstracted gestures create a space for sensitive contemplation of the horse, as well as potential for empathy with it.”
